Installation Tutorial – VMware Workstation Player 17 & CAN CLIP V192 (Virtual Machine)

This guide explains step by step:

  • installing VMware Workstation Player 17

  • the correct opening of the CAN CLIP V192 virtual machine

  • the correct connection of the Renault CAN CLIP probe to the virtual machine

✅ PREREQUISITES

  • PC running Windows 8 / 10 / 11

  • Administrator rights on the PC

  • Virtualization enabled in the BIOS (Intel VT-x / AMD-V)

  • Antivirus temporarily disabled (recommended)

  • WinRAR installed for extracting archives

🔹 STEP 1 – Download VMware Workstation Player 17

Download VMware Workstation Player 17.6.2 (compatible with Windows 8 / 10 / 11) via the following link:

🔹 STEP 2 – Installing VMware Workstation Player

  1. Launch the VMware installation file

  2. Follow the installation wizard (default options are recommended)

  3. When the licensing issue arises:

    • Select "Use VMware Workstation Player for personal use"

  4. Complete the installation

  5. Restart the PC if prompted

🔹 STEP 3 – Downloading the CAN CLIP V192 virtual machine

Download the following archive:

  • CAN_CLIP_V192_WIN7_X86.rar

🔹 STEP 4 – Extracting the virtual machine

  1. Right-click on CAN_CLIP_V192_WIN7_X86.rar

  2. Choose Extract here or Extract to a folder

  3. You will receive a folder containing several files, including:

    • CAN_CLIP_V192_WIN7_X86.vmx

⚠️ Important : Do not modify the contents of the folder and do not move the files individually.

🔹 STEP 5 – Opening the CAN CLIP virtual machine

  1. Open VMware Workstation Player

  2. Click on “Open a Virtual Machine”

  3. Navigate to the extracted folder

  4. Select the file:

    • CAN_CLIP_V192_WIN7_X86.vmx

  5. Confirm

🔹 STEP 6 – First startup of the virtual machine

On first launch, VMware displays a message like:

“This virtual machine might have been moved or copied”

➡️ You must choose:

I MOVED IT

⚠️ Do not click on I Copied It (risk of license and hardware ID issues).

The Windows 7 32-bit virtual machine then starts automatically.

🔹 STEP 7 – Connecting the CAN CLIP probe to the virtual machine

⚠️ Crucial point : the probe must be connected to the virtual machine , and not to the host PC .

Prerequisites

Before this step, connect the CAN CLIP probe's OBD2 cable to the vehicle's OBD2 port so that the probe is powered by 12V .
Without this power supply, the CAN CLIP probe will not be visible in the menu:

Player → Removable Devices

Probe connection

  1. Connect the CAN CLIP probe to the PC via USB.

  2. In the VMware menu bar, click on:
    Player → Removable Devices

  3. Select the CAN CLIP probe

  4. Click on:
    Connect (Disconnect from Host)

Expected state

✅ The probe is now visible and usable in Windows 7 (virtual machine)
❌ It should no longer appear as active on the host PC

🔹 STEP 8 – Using CAN CLIP

  • CAN CLIP V192 is already installed and configured in the virtual machine.

  • Launch CAN CLIP from the Windows 7 desktop

  • You can perform the vehicle diagnostics.

⚠️ IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • Always launch CAN CLIP from the virtual machine

  • Always connect the probe to the VM and not to the host.

  • Never update Windows 7 in the VM

  • Do not change the VM's hardware settings without reason.
